Fencing is a very safe sport, but how you act while in club (traditionally the venue where fencers train is called a fencing salle), how you handle the equipment and the condition of the equipment you are using can make things safer for everyone.....

Salle Safety Rules

NEVER point a weapon at someone who isn’t wearing a mask.
ALWAYS carry your weapon pointing to the ground or by the point.
(When not fencing).
DON’T run with a weapon.
WATCH what others are doing and avoid getting too close to the action.
(When not fencing).
HALT! means STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING NOW!
  • Stop immediately.

  • Don’t take your mask off.

  • Don’t do anything sudden.

  • (like spin round to see what’s happening)

DO put your weapon down before putting your mask on (unless/until you can put a mask on with one hand.)
ALWAYS check your kit and your opponent’s kit is present and undamaged before fencing:
  • Mask ✓

  • Plastron ✓

  • Jacket ✓

  • Glove ✓

  • Zips Fastened etc. ✓

  • Weapon button/tip in good condition ✓

NEVER fence with damaged kit.

DO tell a coach about any damage:
  • missing weapon tips, holes in jackets, broken blades, broken zips, dented masks etc.
