Meet our coaches

Our coaching team are all volunteers with varying levels of experience both coaching and fencing competitively. They have all qualified through the British Fencing coach education scheme and are listed on the BF Coaches Register.

Our team

Our qualified & registered coaches are all keen fencers and are dedicated to making fencing accessible to as many people as they can. They aim to make Durham Phoenix Fencing Club a welcoming and inclusive environment for anyone and everyone to learn and develop their fencing.

Simon Welsh

Head Coach
Simon started his fencing journey in the late 80's in Orkney with the newly formed Stromness (later Orkney) Fencing Club. He continued fencing and coaching at University in St. Andrews, then Durham, and has been a member of Durham Phoenix from it's early days in the 00's. He took over as head coach in 2025 when Chris Morton semi-retired and passed the reins.
